Friday night looked promising for the Badgers after losing to North Dakota, but in a 1-0 game. Saturday night would prove to be a different story. Especially the third period.
The storyline of Saturday night's outing sounded at first like the Friday game. Scott Gudmandson keeps the Badgers in a close game. That is until the third period when the Fighting Sioux busted the game wide open.
Midway through the second period the Fighting Sioux struck first with a goal when Matt Fratin scored on a power-play. Heading into the third period it would be a 1-0 lead for the Fighting Sioux, but the Badgers would answer.
Just over four minutes into the third period Wisconsin defenseman John Ramage stuck his slap shot in the back of the net. That would tie the game at 1-1, but the Sioux would answer right back.
A little over a minute later Corban Knight redirected a shot into the net, and the Sioux had regained the lead. Knight would strike again just two minutes later when he put the rebound off of a Chad Genoway shot to give the Sioux a two goal cushion.
The Fighting Sioux would put another goal on the board later in the third to take a 4-1 lead. A lead that the Badgers would cut into, but not overcome. Late in the period Justin Schultz would find the back of the net, but to little too late.
North Dakota would go on to win the game 4-2, and sweep the Badgers for the weekend. A series that head coach Mike Eaves says was a big reality check.
"This weekend was a real reality check," said Eaves. "If we want to be where North Dakota is, we have to look in the mirror and be honest."
