Recruiting is a big deal in college sports, and it sometimes comes down to factors that coaches can not control. The case of Derek Watt it was family that couldn't be controlled for Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald.
Back in July Watt offered a verbal commitment to become a Wildcat. Now that commitment has been withdrawn, and has flipped to a conference rival; the Wisconsin Badgers.
In case you didn't pick up on it already perhaps it should be pointed out again. The name of the recruit is Derek Watt. A senior linebacker at Pewaukee High School, but more notebly he is J.J. Watt's little brother.
Whether or not big brother was a major factor in Derek Watt switching his commitment has yet to be announced, but if it was the case it wouldn't be surprising.
Following his big brother's footsteps will not be easy given what has happened so far this season. Nor will it be easy following in the footsteps of his brother as a walk-on.
Derek Watt will most likely be a "gray shirt" in his first season, and not receive a scholarship. Just like his big brother who walked on after playing at Central Michigan for one year as a tight end.
The road may be a long for Derek to fill the shoes of his big brother, but a road he is choosing to go down. A road with high expectations, and big hurdles.
