One of the big questions this week surrounding the Wisconsin football team has been the health of running back John Clay. Will he start? Will he play? Will he even dress? Well the answer to at least two of those questions is yes.
Currently Clay will dress for Saturday's game against Indiana, but the odds of him playing are slim at best. Following the knee injury at Purdue last weekend there were many that thought that Clay would not dress, but despite the early reports he will now be on the sidelines in pads. Not street clothes.
Don't expect Clay to see any time on the field this week, and not just because of the opponent. The play of Montee Ball over the past few weeks has made the decision to sit an injured Clay even easier. Add in that running back James White is also cleared to play after his own leg injury, and you have even more reason to sit Clay for the game.
Because of the depth at the running back position Wisconsin has been able to substitute players in this season and not skip a beat. Early in the season it looked like Montee Ball was still going to be the number two back; then James White stepped in. Just weeks later Ball returned during the Iowa game when White went down with a knee injury.
Again this week Ball will be the one picking up the slack from his injured teammates, and he will not be the only player doing it on the offense. With the injury to center Peter Konz his backup Bill Nagy will need to leave his tight end jersey in the locker room since he will be managing the snaps.
Nagy has seen time at the center position on multiple occasions this season though. Most notably in the Iowa game. In the second half Konz went out with a leg injury similar to the one keeping him out this week. Nagy stepped in while Konz was briefly out of the game.
Two weeks later at Purdue Nagy needed to step in for Konz again when he went down with an ankle injury. This week he will again need to fill in for Konz, but this time the redshirt senior will see time at center the whole game.
The injury news for the Badgers is not all bad though. As mentioned earlier James White is cleared to play in the game against the Hoosiers, and says that he is 100%. Another key member of the offense should see significantly more time at his spot at tight end. Of course we are talking about Lance Kendricks. So not all is bad, but still some healing needs to be done for the Badgers.
