Top Five Wiscons Football Plays of All Time: #2 Bringing Back the Axe

Rivalries are perhaps the best part of sports. You have the Red Sox versus the Yankees. The Tar Heels versus the Blue Devils. And the Badgers versus the Gophers?

Surprisingly for most avid college football fans the longest running rivalry between two schools is "The Battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe." A rivalry that has taken many twists and turns over the years. Eras of dominance, and eras of parody, but only one play truly stands out above them all.

In 2005 the Badgers were tailing late against the Gophers at the Metrodome, and were hoping to get the ball one last time. The offense was ready to take the field with a chance to win the game, but they were denied that opportunity. By their own special teams.

Jonathon Casillas was able to break threw and block a Justin Kucek punt deep in Gopher territory. The Minnesota five yard line to be exact. The blocked punt would then roll into the endzone where it was recovered by Ben Strickland. That would decide the game, and the Badgers would take the Axe in a thrilling 38-34 victory.

So for the second greatest play in Wisconsin football history we give you: Bucky Knocks Down the Gophers.
